Dear Parents,
You are cordially invited to be
a partner in your child’s education.
Stay-Tuned: Ask your child what he or she is studying, and look in his/her folder. The folder is where you will find any homework that needs to be completed. I will also send home progress reports or make phone calls if I feel that your child is not progressing as expected.
Ask Questions: If you have any concerns or are wondering why something is happening, please feel free to call or email me any time. I welcome all concerns, ideas, and feedback that affect your child or our classroom. If something is not working, I am more than willing to talk. I welcome all feedback and I promise to get back to you immediately!
Homework: All homework assignments are listed in two locations: this blog and on our classroom's Edline site. You should expect that your child will have some type of homework most every day. As a rule, we have a math worksheet that is directly based on the Problem Set we do as a whole class in school. This can be used to help students with homework. Additionally, students will have a spelling worksheet based on the spelling words for the week. As a minimum, students should be reading for at least 20 minutes per night. I encourage you to set up with your child a scheduled time for homework each day. Extracurricular activities such a Boy Scouts, dance, soccer, etc. should not be excuses for failure to complete homework. Students should be able to do most assignments independently, but please help if it is completely necessary. If you notice that your child is not able to do an assignment on his or her own, please jot me a note so I can work individually with your child on the problems that are causing him/her difficulty. I will contact you if your child is falling behind or turning in poor work.
Each child should have a Homework folder to take homework assignments to and from school. You will find all homework and notes from school in this folder. You should send any notes to school in the folder as well. I ensure that all students receive their nightly homework by handing it to them directly when they pack up at the end of the day. The PTO is not providing folders this year.
Snack and Birthdays: All students may bring a nutritious snack and a bottle of water to school everyday. Please do not send water bottles that have twist-off caps (i.e. disposable bottles). Students' snacks include no more food than can be eaten in 10-15 minutes.
Please also give me a heads up at least a week ahead of time if your child is planning to bring in anything for his or her birthday or if you would like to come in to be a guest reader on your child's special day. Please do not send in goodie bags or distribute birthday party invitations in class unless every student in the class is invited or every child of your child's same gender. Also, be mindful that we have students with life threatening food allergies in our classroom, so an alternative to bringing in cookies, cupcakes, or any other food item for birthdays is highly recommended (goodie bags full of non-edible treats, reading to the class yourself or sending in your child's favorite book, allowing him/her to read it to the class, and then donating it to the class library in his/her name are just a couple of options). Thanks!
